November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. People with diabetes are more likely to develop blinding eye conditions and diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, the fourth leading cause of blindness in the world. Yet recent studies have revealed low awareness of the issue, particularly among ethnicities at higher risk for diabetes. Early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care can reduce the risk of severe vision loss by 95%. To raise awareness that Americans may not be defending themselves against diabetes-related vision loss, this November the American Academy of Ophthalmology encourages those with diabetes to take proactive steps to protect their vision.
