Freckles in the eye may put one at higher risk for Uveal Melanoma

Although freckles in the eye, like freckles on the skin, are common, freckles in the eye may put one at higher risk for Uveal Melanoma, a primary ocular cancer that typically starts in the Choroid, the pigmented tissue filled with blood vessels that provides oxygen and nutrients to the eye. While Uveal and skin melanoma develop from the same pigmentation cells that create melanin and color our skin, Uveal Melanoma is very rare, with approximately 2000 men and 1500 women diagnosed in 2020. Uveal Melanoma can have no symptoms, and is most often identified during a routine eye exam. If not treated, it’s likely to spread to the liver. While many risk factors of Uveal Melanoma are beyond one’s control, Learn more at http://bit.ly/3rsbrmd, and be sure to schedule regular eye exams with your Retinologist at High Country Macula.

Changes in one’s Retina offer a glimpse into heart health

Changes in one’s Retina offer a glimpse into heart health. A recent study found that rising blood pressure and stiffening arteries – two indicators for vascular disease – create easily detectable changes to the tiny blood vessels in the back of the Retina. Although these changes don’t necessarily signal vision problems, narrowing Retinal arteries may signal a higher risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, or death. High Country Macula is adjusting our “flu-like illness” patient protocols

As Covid-19 touches more of our lives, High Country Macula is adjusting our “flu-like illness” patient protocols to be more inline with changes to CDC COVID-19 recommendations. We’ll ask everyone who enters our care centers to wear masks with two or more layers that cover the nose and mouth, and secure under the chin (please bring your own mask), and we’ll enforce social distancing in our waiting rooms. We ask patients to wait in their vehicles until it is their time to be seen. We have eased scheduling restrictions to allow all patients in need to be seen, allowing one family member or guardian to accompany the patient into our care centers, if necessary. The purpose of this update is to protect our patients and staff, ease patient burden, and streamline the evaluation and management for those people with a flu-like illness. We have posted these new procedures to our website at http://hcm.mobiussites.com/…/flu-like-illness-protocols
We do hope that all of our patients will be understanding of the extraordinary circumstances we are operating under to bring the most efficacious Retinal care possible to those in need. We wish you and all of our patients the best of health, free of Covid-19.

Did you know that a poor diet can lead to blindness?

Did you know that a poor diet can lead to blindness? Dietary deficiencies are rare in developed world because of easy access to nutritious food, but the story of the 17-year-old boy who became legally blind from eating a diet of only chips, fries, white bread, and processed pork shows that you can be blinded by what you don’t eat. It was concluded that his diet resulted in B12 deficiency; low levels of vitamin D, copper and selenium; high levels of zinc, and severe optic neuropathy, which damaged his optic nerve and stole his sight. Physicians have long known that good nutrition benefits your vision, visit http://bit.ly/2OqBPKw to learn more.

Sleep Apnea is a risk for developing Diabetic Retinopathy and Macula Edema

It is estimated that 22 million people in the United States suffer from Sleep Apnea. Research shows that Sleep Apnea is a risk for developing Diabetic Retinopathy and Macula Edema, complications of Diabetes that are leading causes of vision loss or blindness in the United States. When people with Diabetes have poor control over their blood sugar levels, the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eyeball can become damaged. Researchers believe that Sleep Apnea may contribute to the development and worsening of these pathologies by increasing insulin resistance, elevating inflammation and raising blood pressure, all of which can damage the blood vessels behind the Retina. A research team has developed the first biohybrid artificial Retina

An international research team has taken a further step to solve Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) blindness by developing the first biohybrid artificial Retina, built with silk fibroin, an insoluble protein present in silk with the characteristics of healthy Retina cells. This biohybrid Retina, which integrates with surrounding Retina tissue, is a cell therapy designed to reconstruct a damaged Retina. Though further research is necessary, the promise of artificial Retinas is an important step toward solving the problem of blindness faced by AMD patients. Learn more at http://bit.ly/2JlDmmm

Basketball is the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in the United States

Although beginning a little later than last year, the NBA season is in now full swing, and we’re reminded of the sobering statistics that show that basketball is the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in the United States. The most common injuries among basketball players include scratched corneas, orbital trauma and fractures, and hyphema, when a contusion causes blood to collect in the front of the eye. Most of these injuries can be prevented by one simple step – wearing protective eyewear. Protective eyewear has become more and more prevalent on NBA courts in recent years – hopefully more and more stars take this precaution that can save their vision and possibly their careers. Stay safe.
